Melany K. Terranova is a fifth generation artist, whose
conceptual, mixed media approach to art honors the human spirit
and documents aspects of our culture. Over the past twenty years
she has become a recognized authority in children’s art,
participated in numerous art residencies, and consulted with
schools, corporations and community groups regarding the
arts and art education. She is the author of Scrib-L-Dee-Doo , a
workbook series designed to teach children, assist parents,
and train teachers, using a refreshingly clear approach to drawing.
A four year art residency resulted in a best-selling book related to
9/11, entitled Children’s Prayers for America, which was featured by
The Los Angeles Times as an important book to use in discussing
world events with children.
Currently, her studio work is conceptual, presenting provocative
issues that affect our culture both locally and globally, with a focus
on the many layered textures in our lives. Her work has been
influenced by the style, verve and color of Matisse, Giorgio
Morandi, Van Gogh, Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hess, Fred Sandbeck
and Antoni Tapies.
Using mixed media from the life affirming symbolism of eggshells,
to the storytelling powers of paint and text, to strings representing
our primal need to connect with one another, she creates thought
provoking images designed to stimulate personal reflections. Her
work is described as urban, fresh, and muscular; usually audacious,
and at times quirky. Ultimately, her goal is to inspire observers to
see something new through insightful portrayals of the many
nuances of light and shadow that form the human spirit.
A graduate of Syracuse University, she has also studied at the New
School of Social Research, Scottsdale Artists’ School, Bio Fine Arts,
Willa Shalit Studio (Santa Fe), Art Student’s League (NYC), and The
New York Studio School.
