Marty Gibson grew up on Nassau County’s south shore on Long
Island, N.Y. He moved to the Valley in 1987, has lived in Ahwatukee for
21 years and has spent the past 19 in commercial insurance claims with
Scottsdale Insurance Company.
A public speaker and four-time president of Toastmasters International,
Gibson has won numerous speech and speech evaluation contests. He
makes frequent presentations to local school and civic groups on a
variety of topics. An avid hiker and photographer, he counts over 20,000
photos in his personal collection. Gibson is a published author who is
working on a second book about the history of the Ahwatukee Foothills
area. He writes a monthly column for the Ahwatukee Foothills News and
periodically for “A” Magazine, while serving as a Hospice of the Valley
volunteer.
Gibson discovered stained glass crafting when a neighbor
enthusiastically showed him some of his creations. “In many ways,
stained glass evokes the polar opposite of today’s technology-aided,
instant-gratification society. It involves painstaking, at times tedious
detail, with progress measured in small increments. It unfolds slowly
over time, but the old-world craftsmanship can be timelessly unique and
enduring, continuing to radiate beauty long after faster, easier projects
have been forgotten,” he observes.
With a son in his senior year at Mountain Pointe High School, Gibson
returns to the east coast a couple of times a year, where he delights in the
dramatic contrasts between east coast people, food and greenery, and
those of his adopted southwestern desert.
