Artist Statement: I first realized that I was an
artist when I was six years old & saw the first of
my paintings hanging in the Youngstown
(Ohio) Museum of Art. It was a colorful
painting of ice skaters in the moonlight,
blissfully unaware that their legs were not
attached to their bodies.
My involvement with color has grown more
intense during the years since that time. While I
was in school I began to question the
conventional use of color and started to develop
my own more expressionistic system.
Someone once asked me if I "really see all those
colors?" My first response was “Yes", and
today, I still say "Yes". I can't really say when
I began to see more in my mind's eye than with
my physical eyes. My particular color system
gives me a unique foundation to build on.
As my work has progressed, it has become
more personal. I want it to be intimate and to
record my response to the beauty of nature as it
touches me and to communicate to others joy
and hope.
My love of color led me to South Mountain
where, for a number of years, I painted the
springtime flowers in the gardens of the
Japanese growers. Now that the gardens are
gone, I enjoy painting other beautiful spots
around our valley such as Papago Park,
Desert Botanical Garden, and The Farm at
South Mountain.
