Bertica Garcia Dubus was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.
Although she did not begin her formal schooling in Fine Arts until the age of 16, her
earliest memories of favorite things involve drawing pads and pencils. When a need for
artistic skills arose, both teachers and classmates looked to Bertica, and she always
enjoyed stepping in to fill their requests. Still, she did not imagine that she might pursue
a career in art, a possibility that opened when she went to college. Ms. Garcia began art
studies in earnest at Saint Dominic College in St. Charles, Illinois, where she received her
B.A. degree in Fine Arts. There, she immersed herself in many techniques and mediums,
but was most attracted to the Classical/Realistic style of oil painting, which she has
continued to explore and personalize since. Her avocation become her vocation, she
continued her education at the Art Institute of Chicago. One of her favorite college
professors once told her “You will never be alone as long as you have a piece of paper
and a pencil at hand.” She has since also discovered that the ability to see light and
shadow, and recognize beauty in the simplest object, not only leads to purest joy but
provides an incredible learning tool. Bertica considers herself blessed to have had the
opportunity to develop a trained eye and hopes that through her works others will come
to see and appreciate the beauty of creation.
Over the course of her career, Ms. Garcia has participated in exhibitions in the United
States and in the Dominican Republic. On three separate occasions, her works won
awards at the Bienal E. Leon Jimenez show in Santiago, Dominican Republic, perhaps
that country’s most prestigious juried art exposition. Critics have described her style as
realistic in nature, and her paintings as figurative works that tell a story with warmth and
feeling. Since moving to Phoenix in 1985, Bertica has turned her eye for detail, color, and
design to good use as a graphic artist and illustrator, both on staff at advertising agencies
and presently on her own.
In the fall of 2007, Bertica was the Artist in Residence at The Artist's Studio. Her exhibit
was titled; “Bertica's” The title implied her return to the easel and showcased a collection
of people seen from the back. Her work is currently at Artspace, a gallery in the
Scottsdale art district. She is currently preparing a “one-woman show” which will take
place in the Dominican Republic in the Spring of 2009.
