Artist - Barbara Doerrer-Peacock
at the Farm at South Mountain
The Artist's Studio

the late 1980s after I attended a seminar in a
Benedictine monastery with a watercolor
artist who spoke eloquently about the
merging of her spirituality and her art. It was
the first time those two worlds of my life
came together. Because water and light are
such potent symbols for God, and because
watercolor has a life of its own, and tends to
guide the artist, rather than the artist being in
complete control of the medium, I have found my faith enriched
by hearing and seeing how God can speak through my
painting. I predominantly use scripture passages for the
subject, simply because it is the vehicle of sensing God’s
presence for so many people…particularly many of the most
familiar phrases that have been long memorized, prayed and
meditated on.
I am co-pastor with my husband, of South Mountain
Community Church, 7th St. and Southern Ave., which is dually-
affiliated with the United Church of Christ and the United
Methodist Church. I am a Northern Midwesterner who has
found her spiritual and artistic home in the desert Southwest!
