Artist-in-Residence Program ~ Finding the Extraordinary in the Ordinary
Artist Statement
While on a journey to Barcelona, Spain, St. Ignatius Loyola
had a vision of God, which gave him a whole new outlook
on creation. In her photos, Dr. M. Clare Sweeney seeks to
capture the beauty of creation in nature, in people, in
architecture, and in artifacts.
Most of the photos on exhibit were taken during a
Sabbatical and on pilgrimages and retreats. M. Clare
believes that through photography—the visual capture of
images—we come to see—to know—the Divine through
our senses. We glimpse the Spirit through the mystery
and magic of People, Nature, and Architecture. M. Clare
tries to capture the beauty of creation and, in particular,
the beauty of the land that Jesus walked that holds so
much history and mystery for Christians, Muslims, and
Jews today.
As a facilitator of writing workshops, M. Clare Sweeney
views her photography as an expression of Writing with
Light. She is inspired to avoid all attempts to “improve”
the quality of the subject with technical enhancements,
such as PhotoShop, believing that nature reflects the truest
artistry and cannot be improved upon, even on gray, rainy
days!
A self-taught photographer, M. Clare seeks, with her
idol, Ansel Adams, “clarity, directness, and honesty” in her
photos. She tries to capture the essence and
transformative power of a natural scene and thereby create
an evocative response from the viewer. She asks the
viewer to respond to the question, “What do YOU see?”
