The last several years have been very exciting for me as I have seen the effect
that plein-air painting has had upon my work, and upon how I approach the
canvas. As a realist painter, I want you to be able to understand the image
but more importantly, to be able to feel and experience the subject. Whether
I paint the sea, a lush desert landscape, or my daughter asleep in the sun, my
hope is that it will be rendered in such a way that you the viewer will know
exactly what made me stop and say “WOW!” It’s not about me, but about
the subject, the colors, atmosphere, memories and the feel of a place and
time. Hopefully my work stands on its own, not needing further explanation.
Most of my time is spent painting plein-air, often finishing the piece on the
spot, sometimes using them as a sketch to work up a larger piece in the
studio. I prefer to paint on hard board and in oil. Because I live in central
Arizona I have easy access to California beaches, Mexico, New Mexico, and
Colorado. Born and raised in Arizona means that the grayed greens here are
my comfort zone. By keeping my subject matter and locations varied it
keeps the work fresher and keeps me from falling into formula painting.
Shifting from painting grayed desert greens to the deep emerald greens of
Colorado is always challenging!
My home is shared with my husband Andy of 29 years, a daughter (17) a
senior in high school and several furry friends. My middle son is married
and just graduated from ASU, and my oldest son is a nationally syndicated
cartoonist. Life is chaotic and I would not have it any other way. The support
I receive from my family is a blessing and has shaped who I am as an artist. I
strive to improve my skills with challenging subject matter, working with
mentors, and I know I will be a lifetime student of the arts.

Cindy Carrillo- During the Residency my focus will be all the corners,
views, and scenes to be found on The Farm property. Artists study the effects
that light has on their subjects, the creation of values which creates shape, light
allows us to see color, perspective is affected by light- all these factors work
together to effect our final product. Instead of mountains, cactus and desert
washes, I get to put my study into lush landscape, pecan groves, old farm
buildings, chickens, rows of flowers & herbs and visitors sitting under
umbrellas. During this time I invite you to come down and discover The Farm,
draw & paint on your own and stop by the Artist Studio. Or sign up for the
varied classes or watch the demonstrations that are being offered teaching
artists.
Welcome to The Farm!
